Music Review: Dawaat-e-Ishq

Music Review: Dawaat-e-Ishq

Music: Sajid-Wajid

Price: Rs 175

The OST begins with the title song sung by Javed Ali and Sunidhi Chauhan. Composers Sajid-Wajid have grown up on ’70s music and the influence shows. It’s a mish-mash of all those qawwalis that were a staple of the ’70s and ’80s cinema, albeit served with a modern twist. It aptly captures the flavour of the film and makes you hungry for more.

Mannat which comes next has a slight Arabic feel to it. Sonu Niigaam along with Shreya Ghoshal elevate the song through their inspired singing, otherwise it has a been-there-don-that feel to it.

Wajid takes the mike along with Shreya in the breezy number Rangreli, clearly the best song of the album because both singers latch onto the naughty lyrics (by Kausar Munir) and pep up the fun. Such frothy numbers are Sajid-Wajid staples and they expectedly come up with a winner.

Shayarana tries to recreate the magic of Pareshaan and offers the same rock feel. This time however, Shalmali falls just short of making it a great song. You can sense that she’s making an effort, that she isn’t being as free spirited as she was in Pareshaan.

Jadu tone waaliyan sung by Shabab Sabri has a Punjabi earthiness that appeals to you from the word go. Sabri, known for his qawwali roots, can now lay claim to Punjabi pop elements as well. The dhol, percussion and his robust voice remind you of early Gurdass Mann.

The album ends with Mannat reprise, which sort of swaps Sonu’s and Sunidhi’s portions.

It’s the fun numbers, Rangreli and Jaadut tone waaliyan which stay with you, surprising because one expected love ballads from a romantic film. Or perhaps director Habib Faisal is serving us a something else in the guise of a rom com…
