Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania

Music Review: Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania
Composers: Sachin-Jigar and Sharib-Toshi

Label: Sony Music

A Karan Johar film is expected to have melodious music and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is no exception. The songs are mostly party numbers and the youth have already taken to it, especially to Saturday Saturday. The song is a recreation of the popular Indeep Bakshi and Badshah number, which was released two years ago. The same singers have sung the song and the video featuring Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt has already become a hit.

The same is true of Samjhawan. This is a 2010 Rahat Fateh Ali Khan song composed by Pakistani singer and composer Jawad Ahmed,  which appeared in the Punjabi movie Virsa, starring Arya Babbar. Sharib-Toshi haven’t changed the tune much. Instead of Rahat and Farah Anwar, the singers here are Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal. Their mellifluous voices give a hatke twist to the original. The song is sure to get like a million downloads in days to come.

Emotional fool is the third and last song composed by Sharib-Toshi and sung by Toshi himself, the song has EDM strains and faithfully recreates the specifications of the genre, punching it with some Punjabi tadka as well.

Now we come to Sachin-Jigar numbers. Daingad daingad is your typical Punjabi wedding song, with sexual innuendos galore. Sung by various artistes like Divya Kumar, Akriti Kakkar, Pratibha, Deepali, Niharika and veteran Udit Narayan, whose presence elevates its levels. The fast-paced orchestration and wacky lyrics fit in neatly with the mood of the song and make it an interesting mix.

Lucky tu lucky me is a pure dance number sung competently by Benny Dayal and Anushka Manchanda with rap by Varun Dhawan, who does a commendable job for a non-singer. The energetic number feels a little like Saturday Saturday in between. Coincidence or creative inspiration – you decide.

D se dance feels like Balam pichkari in the beginning. Sachin-Jigar were Pritam’s (he composed Balam pichkari for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani), associates at one time and the influence shows. Vishal Dadlani, Shalmali Kholgade and Anushka Manchanda have sung it with a lot of verve and josh to make you forget the similarities and tap your feet along with it.

All-in-all, the OST hits home with its lively numbers. It would have been better if all the songs were originals but one shouldn’t complain as long as they work in the film’s favour.
