Movie Review: Deewana Main Deewana

Movie Review: Deewana Main Deewana

Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Govinda, Prem Chopra, Kader Khan, Jonney Lever and Shakti Kapoor

Director: KC Bokadia

The last time one heard about KC Bokadia was more than a decade ago when he managed a casting coup by getting Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit together on screen for Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam as a producer. This time he is back and dons the director’s hat with Priyanka Chopra and Govinda starrer Deewana Main Deewana.

The story is about Govinda, a spoilt brat who is eligible for marriage but doesn’t find any girl interesting. Until he sets his eyes on Priyanka Chopra that is. It is love at first sight and Govinda is ready to go to any lengths to get the leggy lass. Even if it means lying about his identity. The story of the film has nothing new to offer. It is a mishmash of a lot of things we have seen in the 80s and 90s. The jokes are stale and even make you cringe a dozen times. The director could have easily done away with Johnny Lever’s track completely. The movie has been in the pipeline for a few years and it looks dated. Govinda’s ghastly wardrobe reminds us of the torture his clothes put us through the 90s with a lot of shiny leather jackets and sequenced tight fit t-shirts. The screenplay and editing is disjointed too almost making it seem as if the writers and editor were not serious about the film. So much so that protagonist Govinda’s character doesn't have a clear stance, is he a nice guy or a vindictive brat? Priyanka Chopra looks raw and back when the movie was shot she wasn't on top of the acting game. The good side of which is that you come to know how she has upped her game leaps and bounds since.

The movie’s tag line says murder, mystery and music. Well the murder and mystery don’t come in till the final act of the film. Till then you’re left fending off bad jokes and even worse romantic sequences like PC dropping her earring the first time Govinda spots her and he holds on to it because it reminds him of her. In terms of music Bappi Lahiri's score is best described forgettable. Not a single track stays with you.

Frankly speaking this movie should have been kept in the cans. Stay away from it, as it has nothing to offer in the theatre or at home.
