Movie review: I Love New Year

Movie review: I Love New Year
Why would you relegate a fine actor like Sunny Deol to rom com frivolity? Especially at the age of 58. That’s the story of I Love New Year. Much like its hopelessly contrived title, this film just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. It’s based in New York. They could’ve just called it I Love New York and it would’ve made more sense.

Nonetheless, there are bits and pieces of this film that work. For starters, the main plot is really promising albeit borrowed from a soviet film called The Irony Of Fate. Randhir (Sunny Deol) gets so drunk that he doesn’t realize he’s been accidentally put on a flight to New York from Chicago. When he lands in NY, in his drunken state he ends up at Tikku’s place, which has the exact same address as his house in Chicago. He doses off in her bed, but when Tikku arrives all hell breaks loose. Tikku’s boyfriend Ishaan (Navin Chaudhary) misunderstands the situation and the situations get both funny and dramatic. Of course, all this is happening during New Year’s and therefore the title. Once that premise has been established, the film stops making any sense going further. It just turns into a mish-mash of sentimentality, annoying characters and clichéd rom com developments. The odd pairing of Kangana Ranaut and Sunny Deol doesn’t help matters. Neither does the amateur execution by directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru. They try to pass of Bangkok as Chicago. The police precinct in New York looks like a joke. And Ishaan’s character for no rhyme or reason takes a shower in a suit and overcoat.

Music is more often than not, the saving grace of bad romantic movies. But the tunes on offer in this movie are so vanilla you can hardly recall the song five minutes after you’ve heard it. They even go wrong with the revisit of Gur nalo ishq mitha. That’s just unforgivable.

The one reason you’ll be able to sit through this movie is Kangana Ranaut. She’s quite literally too good to be in this film. And yet, there she is, driving her heart and soul into a film and character that’s got no legs. When she dons that pearl necklace and the pink saree and she pretends to strum the guitar, she looks absolutely ethereal. They could’ve paused on her for half-an-hour and the film would’ve gotten more tolerable. Sunny Deol though looks absolutely out of place in his character. He holds fort through the comedy, but that’s not all that’s asked of him. He’s made to do stuff you’d imagine Ranbir Kapoor or Imran Khan in. It just doesn’t gel. The only other actor who fits the bill is Prem Chopra. It’s a pleasure to see the man at work.

I Love New Year is a romantic comedy that’s neither too funny nor too alluringly mushy. It’s just a posh looking two-hour long feature film. Very forgettable fare.
