Movie Review: Ragini MMS 2

Movie Review: Ragini MMS 2
Director: Bhushan Patel

Cast: Sunny Leone, Saahil Prem, Pravin Dabbas, Sandhya Mridul and Divya Dutta

For the first time, on Indian film, audiences will experience the thrill of blurred out assets. That is Ragini MMS 2’s achievement. They put a blurry patch on Sunny Leone’s bosom, and the rest of the way, even on cold misty nights; she’s prancing around a haunted house in expensive lingerie. There’s even girl on girl action, what with Sunny and Sandhya Mridul sharing a lip lock. This is as erotic as an Indian horror film gets. Pity it has the same amount of narrative value as a porn video.

Go back to Pawan Kriplani’s Ragini MMS and you can see how novel the film was. The Paranormal Activity style camera work did wonders for a home-brewed possession story in the original. Bhushan Patel’s sequel on the other hand turns out to be a spin-off of The Conjuring. The story veers from the original, making this film about the spirit of a mother who killed her kids. The angry spirit possesses Sunny, who’s an actress playing the part of Ragini, in a film based on the events that happened in the first film. So basically, they’re shooting Ragini MMS in Ragini MMS 2. And that is no Inception moment.

It was the static of a hidden camera catching paranormal movements in a desolate house that made Ragini MMS an effective horror movie. In the sequel though, the director trades scares for cheap erotica. You have a shower scene, where thrills and spills are abreast. You have seduction in a lake; you have a dreamy love-making scene and almost every excuse in the trashy horror textbook allowing Sunny Leone to show off her million-dollar assets. She gives a decent performance too, if you don’t mind the accented Hindi and plunging neckline.

At one point in the film Pravin Dabbas’ character uses the peculiar term, "horror-sex" to describe a film that’s a combination of horror and sex. It seems like a fitting description of Ragini MMS 2. But all said and done, the moments of thrill in the film are quite effect. One or two scenes could even make you jump out of your seat. There are in-jokes about porn stars not being good actors and sketches of Indian TV actors all of which is cute.

The reason a lot of people will watch Ragini MMS 2 is thanks to the still growing popularity of the songs, Baby Doll and Chaar botal vodka. The total package – the songs, Sunny Leone erotica and the in-your-face scares – is good for an average horror flick. But there’s absolutely no sense to story or treatment. This is what you call a certified Hollywood knock off.
